Hybrid cars, as the name suggests, runs with the assistance of two or more than two distinct power sources. The term hybrid electric vehicles or HEVs best defines them. The HEVs combine an internal combustion engine (ICE) and one or more than one electric motors. Hybrid cars need the help of two or more different devices for propulsion. The two distinct devices are mentioned above. There are also few vehicles that use some other sources of power if available. Such cars are often modified to run on autogas or LPG.

There are various configurations in hybrid cars. in case of a parallel hybrid, the installation of the electric motor and the internal combustion engine (ICE) is done in such a way so that they can power the vehicle on an individual basis and also together. The mid parallel ones usually use a compact electric motor. This compact electric motor helps in providing auto-stop/start features. They also bestow with extra power at the time of acceleration.

The plug-in hybrid cars or the Plug in Hybrid Electrical Vehicle (PHEV) is another categorization of these cars. This general fuel-electric hybrid has increased capacity for energy storage. These can also be connected to the mains electric supply at the fag end of the journey. The reason behind this is to avoid the charging by using the internal combustion engine or the ICE. This decreases the daily usage of ICE and also helps in minimizing the on-road emissions.

The hybrid cars have greater fuel economy and have emissions that are much lower than that of the regular internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEVs). This is primarily because of the way these cars are designed. These types of cars are ideal for driving in the city. There are also lesser noise emissions when the car is running at a lower speed.
